Night Elf Warrior Revisited by Nightblue-art Night Elf Warrior Revisited by Nightblue-art
About three years ago I did my first serious digital painting on my brand new wacom tablet. ([link]) I've been meaning to redo the subject-matter for a while now, but it's difficult to make such a static image interesting without completely revamping it, which is what I ended up doing here.

I'm relatively happy with this painting for a change, and feel like I was able to apply many theories I haven't managed to digest yet during the course of painting this. I may go back this weekend and add some adjustment layers and touch-ups.

It was great to get critiques early on in this painting. Had I gone with my very first drafts this would have sucked much more, heheh.

Sweet fight scene. I like seeing all the cracks and chips in the armor and weapons. Makes it more realistic.

Thanks :) One cool thing about painting is you reliably get better the more you do it. Never doubt and never give up!

beautiful illustration. By the way, I do not think that the ears are bending the wrong way. As it is now, gives the sensation that the whole body is twisted along with the movement of the sword, which add more dynamism to the scene. I would not change it.

haha! show off? Dunno what you are talking about :P

I got some very good crits on it, but tried and failed to rework this, so I'll leave this one for a bit and hopefully come back in the future. Gotta get back into gear for forum activities...

That is incredible! Beautiful forms in there. I also love your use of colors... kinda makes me think back to Jason Manley's color theory class on CA. Anyhow, that's an amazing improvement on what you were doing back then! Keep it up!

Thank you very much :D I didn't take the color theory class but had the fortune to meet Manley and snatch a few tips on color when I was in school. Still trying to digest the tips.

Oh? Now I'm curious! What were some of the tips he gave you? Like what was the one or two tips that you remember the most?

Very simple really. If the value is right and the image still looks muddy, try changing up the color. Use gradations and shifts in color to make it more interesting. I took the tips to mean "don't be bound by the colors you see or the colors you think should be there (local colors, especially,) use color to make things feel right and feel good.

He also suggested one-hour-a-day study from life or from masters for me, trying to see the subtle colors in real life. That was immensely helpful.

Haha cool! Yeah, I remember hearing him say something like that in the color theory class. It was basically the same thing, keep the values, but there were all different subtle bits of colors in master's paintings and in real life that you need to include, that kinda thing... I think one of the examples he had given was including shades of green into skin tone for Caucasians. Something about putting in those subtle color variations will bring out and define colors much more.

Wow! You have really been progressing a lot, Nightblue. I really like this, great colours in it aswell, like in her skin and on the grass especialy. :)

Well, I think your friend is wrong. In my eyes they bend in the correct direction. (compared to her movement and the flames of the swort)
