Elderguard Brennan - process by Nightblue-art Elderguard Brennan - process by Nightblue-art
Here was my process - or lack there of - while working on the undead death knight wow card. If you are an aspiring artist, I hope this will provide some insight to how a noob artist work. If you are a badass... just smile knowingly and move on :) Production-wise, it's a fail process with lots of wasted work. However, it was one of those paintings where I struggled a lot but learned a lot at the end.

Thanks for sharing this :D But I'm a bit puzzled about the feedback you got, in what way was his head cartoony?
The final piece is awesome btw :horns:

I just now realise how important feedback is. It's a good thing that the art comunity is always cool and ready to give a hand. Cheers!

I like this process. To be completely honest, I like it in part because it's reassuring that even people who've Made It still go 'crap, I need to fix all this stuff' when working. But it's a great picture too.

Thanks! I still remember the first time I saw pro's paint live. My biggest takeaway was how much they screw up just like I did - and some of their sketches don't look all that pretty but the end result can still be amazing. Sounds obvious/silly but this knowledge helped me tremendously.

Yeah--it's one thing to sort of know intellectually that pro artists are human and therefore make human mistakes, it's another to have that demonstrated and really realize it, if that makes sense. And it is very helpful knowledge!

Daaamn, that is one badass DK. ;D Seeing your thought process all the way through it was really helpful.
May I ask how long it roughly took to make this? c:

Don't really remember, but most of my cards take a few nights + 1 weekend day to finish. This one went through more struggles, so my guess is 15-20 hours.

Can you please explain how you added the color?

Sometimes I use a layer of muted colors close to 50% gray in value as overlay. I think for this one I might have just started painting over stuff in color.

awesome thanks! I always see people's tutorials say and then I layed down color. And for some reason when I try to it looks like poop -_- lol

Haha color is a tough one. I remember how frustrating it was the first few (10+) times I tried to color my drawings. What helped me a ton is master studies and still life. Try some quick daily color sketches from photos or what's outside of your window, without using color-picker on your reference photo. I would also highly recommend this book: [link] . Hope this helps!

You are very welcome :) I was lucky enough to have a lot of help on my journey, and the least I can do is try to contribute to the open culture I so much admire. Thanks and good luck to you too! Note me any time if you have questions.

That's for writing up all the bits about your process :) It's always nice to be able to see inside an artists' head sometimes.

This is really awesome to see, not just in the process of your painting, but your thought process as well in relation to the feedback and your composition and such. Thanks a lot for sharing :D It turned out awesome!

Thanks a lot! The first time I saw a professional painting (and screwed up and then fixed it,) it was a very liberating experience. Some people can just nail it naturally, but it's good to know that I'm not doomed as an artist for not being able to do that.

Very cool! Do you guys get to work on the cards at work or is it commissioned to your free time?

I normally do, but for this one I think I just painted in the blue FX and then went from there. The yellows might have been overlays.

Thanks for sharing-- and for the record, I think it's much more valuable to see how an artist's thought process and refinement goes than to see a 'master' nail something on the first go :)

Thanks! Yeah, I always get intimidated by people who just instinctively know what to do. But by now I've built up enough confidence to believe that if I just keep screwing with my painting, I'll get it out of the sucky zone eventually.
