Arvos Jadestone - Dwarf Shaman by Nightblue-art Arvos Jadestone - Dwarf Shaman by Nightblue-art

My 4th World of Warcraft Trading Card Game card. I had a hellish time trying to fit a shaman and 4 elements into the little picture frame, but it turned out a lot better than I feared in the end, and I learned a ton in the process.

Thanks! I've actually been drawing casually for a long time, mostly manga. I started seriously thinking about doing art for a living about 4 years ago and started doing digital painting around that time :) Appreciate your kind comments!

So very magical! Even though orange/blue is one of my favorite combos, I have not really implemented in a serious piece yet. This is a great use of orange/blue. The glow of the flame is wonderful and the movement of the piece is great too! Good work! I think you did a great job!

It's absolutely *stunning*. I LOVE your very well-thought-out use of color here, it *really* makes it pop! Shamans and Dwarves go so well together, even though people don't really think that at first. They're very close to the elements!

thank you so much for the kind comment! Squeezing all the elements in there was a compositional nightmare. I was very relieved when it finally worked out ok.

I can see why! Being restricted by certain dimensions gives you an interesting challenge between storytelling and aesthetics/User Experience. I think you did a bang-up job. :)

According to dwarven style magazines, 76.9% dwarven ladies dig the singed look.

Damn that looks cool. Dwarves aren't typically magic-users, but I see no reason why they couldn't be. This is a good argument for why there should be more dwarf mages.

Thank you! It's more of a tribal/shamanic magic. Now that you mention it, you don't see a lot of dwarven mages... mostly clerics.

Hn, I categorize all magic-users as 'mages' with further subdivisions for purpose, intent, specialties, all that. But *shrug* yeah. I think D&D did it to try to balance the races, but in an independent fantasy world there's really no excuse.

Funny, you'd think dwarves wouldn't be terribly religious, either. They're not usually shown putting a heavy emphasis on religion (except for the frequency of clerics), and they tend to be more technological which in fantasy tends to mean atheistic.

I have fond memories of reading about dwarven clerics and their holy waters (read: ale) in one of the Dark Elf Trilogies :) I think they are pretty religious, which tend to go hand in hand with atheistic - a good portion of art in human society since ancient times were created for spiritual purposes.

Ah, Drizzt Do'urden... Idunno, I fell out of the series after the one which I can't remember the name but it was all " The X King". He actually had character development in the first series, a little less in the second, but then it just turned into power-gaming and it got... well, boring. "Here's a problem. Now watch them smash and slice their way through it. Problem solved."

Ditto! I loved the first trilogy. The 2nd trilogy was like, okay... Then from there he's pretty much done, the goody goody character who is not much more than a badass. But the first one remains one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time. The world of underdark was fresh and thrilling, and Drizzt's personal struggle to figure out who he is and where he belong resonated with the teenage me, wrangling with the same problems at a much less epic setting.

Yeah, the first series was pretty good. ^^ Not great on the same level as Tolkien or Le Guin, but still pretty damn good, and fun to read. And when it comes right down to it, that's all that really counts, isn't it? How much fun it is to read.

Woooooow! This is AMAZING! Your best one yet, Grace! :D That's like four lighting sources in one, haha! This is really beautiful. The colors, the textures, the movement--it looks quite epic! Very nice!
